Overcoming the setback of two losses on the night of Friday, Sept. 28 and a loss Saturday morning at the Bates Invitational in Lewiston, Maine, women's volleyball came back Saturday afternoon to beat UMass-Dartmouth in just three games.

The Mules won the match against UMass-Dartmouth 30-15, 30-25 and 30-25, with setter Jenny Lawrence '09 accumulating 31 assists and seven defensive digs. Senior Captains Cassie Sancartier and Jessie Prentice also performed strongly; Prentice had ten digs and seven kills and Sancartier had seven digs and three service aces. Middle blocker Larissa Levine '10 finished with eight kills and six blocks. First-year Heather Arvidson, who came off a career high the week before the Invitational, had seven kills and four blocks.

Earlier on Saturday, the Mules suffered a loss at the hands of the Coast Guard squad, 3-1, with scores of 30-23, 30-22, 24-30 and 30-24. The Mules, however, showed tremendous perseverance extending the match past three games, though they were unable to push the match further against Coast Guard, the only team who went undefeated (4-0) in the Invitational.

Against Coast Guard, high scorer Meridith Lawler '09, who was out until Friday with an injury, led the Mules with 18 kills. Arvidson continued her strong performance with 11 kills, while Levine had eight kills and four blocks. Lawrence set 40 assists and also contributed 14 digs. First-year defensive specialist Clare Reich had 16 digs, and Sancartier had 14 digs.

The previous evening, however, the Mules had not fared as well, though they did play solidly. In the first match, they fell to River College 3-0, with game scores of 30-24, 30-23 and 30-22.

Against River, Prentice led the Mules with 24 digs and Arvidson led in kills with nine. Lawrence had 22 assists and 15 digs, while Lawler committed seven kills. Junior defensive specialist Carlie Minchino had 12 digs despite suffering an ankle injury the previous day in practice.

In the second match of Friday evening, the Mules suffered a 3-0 loss to Springfield College, though they played exceedingly competitively. After losing the first game 30-27, the Mules fought back in the second game and pushed it into extra points, eventually falling 33-31. They then lost the third and the final game of the match 30-21.

Back in her usual fashion, Lawler led the Mules in kills with 13. Arvidson, who had stepped up in the past week while Lawler had been out with an injury, continued her support with ten kills and four blocks. Prentice kept up her strong defensive game for the Mules with 15 digs, while Minichino continued to maintain her game with ten digs. Lawrence, with her usual consistency, finished the game with 20 assists.

The squad hosted Bowdoin College on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the Alfond Athletic Complex after press time. This weekend they will be playing in The Crabtree Classic at Eastern Connecticut Invitational, in Willimantic, Connecticut. The Mules will be facing off first against Ithaca College at 6:00 p.m. They will also play Bridgewater State University, Eastern Connecticut State University and Johnson and Wales University during the Invitational.
