The men's and women's tennis teams, many of whom undeniably spent their first week at Colby, Loudness included, glued to the television, watching the U.S. Open, are in spirits for their season to begin. Just as the excitement of the U.S Open comes to an end, the Mules will keep the action coming for all Colby tennis fans, as Colby's season begins this Friday, September 18, at the Middlebury College Invitational.

Head Coach Doanh Wang enters his third year as head coach for the men's and women's teams, and like Roger Federer's and Kim Clijsters' coaches undoubtedly were in the early round play at the open, Wang is excited about his team's prospects. "I am always excited to see who is going to step up and play some solid tennis. I think that we have the ability to be competitive," Wang Said.

The Mules have high hopes for the season, but it will not come easy. "We are in a conference [New England Small College Athletic Conference] that is among the best, if not the best, in division III tennis," Wang said. However, he continued, "Colby, to me, remains a hidden gem in Division III tennis." The Mules' games will absolutely encompass astonishing surprises like the Juan Martin Del Potro upset over Rafael Nadal, exhilarating plays like Roger Federer's backwards, through the legs, point-winning shot (seriously check it out on youtube.com), and battles like the tie-breaking fourth set of the men's singles final between Del Potro and Federer that we all watched with wide eyes this past week in the U.S. Open.

The women's team has four first-years: Mackenzie Love, Sarah Wiener, Sally Holmes, and Maddy Jones. Wang is excited to have them and thinks they will have a solid season with Colby. The returning seniors are Tara Davidson, Hilana Bernheimer, Julie Achenbaum, Audrey Jacobsen, and Caroline Reaves. Although there will not be captains, Wang said, "I expect [the seniors] to continue to lead the program in a positive way, being role models with their behavior on and off the court." He also expects that they will "help the first-years feel included."
